Grande Parade et Grands Frissons. Expériences du spectateur face aux spectacles forains au XIXe siècle [Great Parade and Great Thrills. Spectator’s Experience of Fairground Shows in the XIXth Century] Article - Mars 2023

L’objectif de cet article est de montrer comment les spectacles de saltimbanques donnés dans la rue et les numéros présentés dans les fêtes foraines relèvent d’une esthétique du spectaculaire, reposant notamment sur une grande interaction entre les artistes et le public. Les forains sont toujours en parade et jouent d’une exhibition constante pour maintenir l’attention de spectateurs par essence bien plus volatiles dans ces théâtres à ciel ouvert. Faire frissonner le spectateur, le faire rêver et attiser sa curiosité sont les principaux ressorts de la dramaturgie foraine.

This article aims to show how the street performances of entertainers and the shows presented in fairs are part of an aesthetic of the spectacular, relying in particular on a great interaction between the artists and the public. The fairground performers are always on parade and play a constant exhibition to maintain the attention of spectators who are essentially more volatile in these open-air theaters. To make the spectator shiver, to make them dream and to arouse their curiosity are the main springs of the fairground dramaturgy.
